Modified Interrupted Behavior Chain

In the IBC, instruction is given after the child begins an activity. For instance, the child might have to put on his/her shoes before going outside. In order to use the typical IBC strategy, the child may get the shoes, put them on, and then be interrupted by the teacher or parent, who presents a communication card that says "help."  The child must touch the communication card or say the word to get help tying his/her shoes in order to complete the chain before going outside (Mirenda & Iacono, 1988).  This ensures that natural consequences are utilized.  (The child requests "help," the shoes are tied, the child gets to go outside)  This Interrupted Behavior Chain can be modified to meet the needs of the child. For example, during structured play activities, the child's interaction with the toy can be interrupted by having the adult take the toy away. When this occurs, he/she can be prompted to request something such as "more" or "play" by vocalizing, signing or giving the icon, before play with the toy can resume.
